Hello there! Welcome to the Brush Basics challenge!

I used to run this challenge ‘live’, but I no longer do so. However, this archive will hopefully serve as a starting resource for you on your brush lettering journey, and I can’t wait for you to explore this world!

The Brush Basics Challenge spans 7 lessons, covering all the basic strokes you need to make (lowercase) letters, and also comes with a free workbook in two sizes — one for larger brush pens and one for smaller brush pens. You can get them as well as a list of my favourite supplies here.

How I know which one to download?

It’s totally your call. You can do both at the same time or one first and the other later. I like learning with big brush pens because I’m forced to slow down and it shows my mistakes clearly. If you have shaky hands though, you may want to consider small pens like the Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip ’cause they are stiffer.

If you’ve tried brush pens before and hated them, don’t be afraid to break the rules and just go for a real paint brush! Some beginners do find it easier — I was never one of them but that might be you!

Where do I start?

1. Watch the intro video. It has all the info you need about supplies to get, and how to prep yourself for success!

2. Gather your supplies, print your workbooks! I’ve a whole list of my favourite supplies together with the workbooks so head over there to download and maybe shop!

3. Figure out when you’re gonna be practicing your lettering. This challenge is designed not to take too much time out of your day: each video class lasts ~10 minutes, and I recommend practicing for at least 15-20 minutes per day. Find a 20-30 minute window to practice each day and set an alarm on your phone!

You’re welcome to work through this at your own pace as this isn’t a guided challenge. However, I don’t want you to rush through the workbook though — we’re aiming for mindful mastery here! The lessons tackle lettering basic stroke by basic stroke, and I know it’s super tempting to just speed-watch everything then jump around, I really want to encourage you to take your time with each lesson before moving on to the next!

Give yourself a day or two (or even longer!) to focus on each lesson before you start the next one.

Alright, that’s enough chattering from me! When you’re ready, head over to Lesson 1 to get started!
